Polite payment reminder messages you can copy
Asking for money is the worst part of the job for a lot of independent contractors, especially in a second language. These short texts are friendly, clear and professional. Copy them, change the names and amounts, and send.
Five rules for asking to get paid
- Ask soon. Send it the same day as the job, or within 24 hours. The longer you wait, the easier it is for the client to forget.
- Say the amount and what it’s for. “$120 for October” is clearer than “the balance.”
- Say how to pay you. Your Venmo, Zelle, Cash App or “cash is fine.” Every extra step is a reason to put it off.
- Be friendly, not sorry. You did the work. There’s no need to apologize for asking.
- Follow up on a schedule. A good rhythm: ask, then remind after 3 days, then after a week or two. Write down when you asked.
Messages to copy
Each one comes in English and Spanish, so you can send the right one to each client.

What to avoid
- Texting late at night or very early. Send between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m.
- Group texts. Money is private. Write to the person who pays.
- Threats or guilt. Stay polite even when you’re frustrated. A calm, clear message gets paid faster than an angry one, and you keep the client.
- Vague amounts. “You owe me some money” starts an argument. Give the exact number and dates.
Kobro writes these for you. Tap Ask to pay and Kobro writes a short, polite message in your client’s language, with the amount and a link where they can add a tip and pay you with Venmo or Cash App. It opens in your own Messages or WhatsApp; you press Send. Kobro even reminds you when it’s time to follow up.
